Pakistan cricket team recently did the unthinkable. After a streak of losses in the World Cup 2019, the green shirts were able to defeat the undefeated Kiwis in Birmingham on Wednesday. As fans came forward to shower wishes for the Sarfraz 11, former captain Pakistan team, Wasim Akram too joyously praised the team.
“Pakistan outclassed New Zealand in all three departments of the game in World Cup match. They bowled well, batted well and fielding was good too,” said the former skipper while talking to a leading publication.
Adding further Wasim said that the team should be given credit for an outstanding performance against the topper team in World Cup 2019 points table.
“They were in commanding position since the first ball of the match,” he emphasized on the team’s performance that was in order right from the beginning.
While talking about individuals, Wasim specially praised Babar Azam – who helped Pakistan sail through the victory with his century – and Shaheen Shah Afridi for his commendable bowling spell.
“Babar has proved that he’s among top batsmen of the world. Haris is also great but he needs to improve his physical fitness if he wants to be among top class batsmen of the world,” Wasim said.
“He (Shaheen) bowled an exciting spell, great line and length. He is back with bang,” he said of the 19-year old fast pacer.
“He shouldn’t have been dropped from the team earlier, he’s a genuine wicket taking bowler with the new ball,” added the former captain.
Wasim also shared some insights for Fakhar Zaman and Muhammad Hafeez, both of whom got out in a hasty manner.
“You don’t try to take all runs in start off a part timer, you need to be calm instead of misreading the delivery,” Wasim said regarding Hafeez. For Fakhar, he said, “Fakhar needs to be more mature with his shot selection.”
Wasim seemed hopeful on Pakistan’s chance at getting into semi-finals and then if history keeps repeating itself like 1992, the team might bring back the trophy too. However, the former captain advised the players to not be complacent against Bangladesh and Afghanistan; he reiterated that Pakistan team has still got to give their best.
